Guest Blogger Juli D. Revezzo–A Cause For Kittens

I meant to be here on the 13th, but I had a little trouble with a certain dark-furred feline. ;)

At any rate, that’s what I’m here to discuss today. The number of strays double as each minute passes. Cats and kittens are abandoned and slaughtered every day in this country. Undoubtedly you’ve seen this terrible story on the news lately:

Mother killed kitten called Dexter with a baseball bat and encouraged son, 8, to torture another cat to death

To combat that abuse, several charity organizations exist to house the homeless cats, spay and neuter them. But the cost of running these organizations is astronomical. To help support these kind souls in their endeavor to care for those who need a helping paw—er, hand—Patty G. Henderson (author of the gothic romantic suspense novels The Secret of Lighthouse Pointe, Castle of Dark Shadows, and The Brenda Strange Supernatural Mysteries) decided to do something. She organized an anthology of strange and dark tales featuring cats, in all kinds of mischief.

Herein, several wonderful authors contributed works, from Patty’s own “Room Service” to Marian Allen’s “Crumb” wherein a thug holds up his ex-girlfriend’s teahouse, shoots her and causes general panic—but doesn’t plan for the cat, to whom he’s deathly allergic.

Patty G. Henderson’s story “Room Service” tells of a hotel maid who witnesses all sorts of mischief and foul play in her hotel. The strangest comes along with an old woman who spends too much time and attention on her cat—and that cat does not like it.

Nat Burns offers “Hisss”, a creepy little story that tells of a woman who is convinced her cats are actually cobras in disguise and out to make a meal of her.

My little offering, “What Sekhmet Keeps” spun the cat requirement a bit, with an immortal shapeshifter from Ancient Egypt who’s been cursed with a cat soul-form, and what she needs to do to regain her lion soul:

evil-cat-copy“What Sekhmet Keeps”

Betrayed by a false lover, cat shifter priestess Onfalia Mau lost her lioness soul and freedom to her lover's treachery and Sekhmet's wrath. Now, after three thousand years, Donquar has returned with one thing in mind: to steal the goddess's scepter. Onfalia knows that to do so means to unleash Sekhmet’s unholy, bloody Slaughter on the world and she'll stop at nothing to foil Donquar's plans.

There are twenty other gems here of the darkly imaginative.

Some of the stories even made me wonder about the power of cats… and now I’m keeping an eye on the neighborhood feline. I’m not so sure she’s as docile and innocent as she looks. ;)

If you’d like to check out the wonderfully mysterious and creepy stories, and help a good cause, Dark Things II: Cat Crimes is available at Amazon and Lulu. All proceeds from the sales of Dark Things II go to the Cat House on The Kings, in LA.

I'm seeing this way late, but I have to comment and support! This collection is *amazing*, the cause is beyond words, and everyone should buy it and read it. Sometimes, people are awful, but sometimes? People are wonderful, too. (And wonderful writers, which makes the world better.)

I'm so glad to see the collection getting good press. :)
