“Unclaimed Baggage” The Unredeemable Hero

When does overcoming adversity become baggage no sane heroine would claim?

Romance readers love a strong, alpha hero. They love it when he’s tortured, has a past of loving and losing and when he finally lets go to allow himself to fall in love with the heroine, it makes the happily ever after all that much sweeter.

But where does the alpha hero’s dark past cross the line into just plain creepiness from which he can never be redeemed in the eyes of a heroine? (provided she isn’t TSTL too stupid to live)

Above all, heroes must be and act heroically. They must own a clear, concise motivation if they behave in ways society would label bad. In other words, if he’s a killer, he better have a damn good reason. Think Josey Wales who, when driven to revenge, hunts down and offs all the miscreants who murdered his wife and son. Everyone can identify with Wales and his need for vengeance.

What makes a hero unredeemable?

Acts of violence toward women (i.e. rape, physical or mental abuse – any woman or romance heroine who would knowingly take up with such a person is a TSTL character)
Overrun by flaws and outrageous ego (no narcissists in romance, please! a selfish man is inherently unsexy)
The cheater, liar – Can you ever look at Tiger Woods the same way again?
The racist – nuff said about that one, ick factor!

The list is doubtless longer but those are a few examples of a character a writer should only take on as a villain.

When I was working on Scarlet Widow, I based one of my heroes on DeWitt Smith (click HERE for more info) a Civil War soldier, who was driven to revenge by the brutal murder of his beloved cousin. My character, Hardin Barksdale, was as hard on the outside as they came, a ruthless killer hellbent on avenging his murdered brother, but his motives were incongruously heartfelt. His emotions ran terrifyingly deep and this was evident in the love he felt for Molly, his brother’s widow.

Here’s an excerpt from Scarlet Widow~

Hardin stood and began collecting his clothing. An upsurge of panic swept Molly. “Where are you going? You’re not leaving?”
His gaze shot to hers. “Not yet.”
Her shoulders dropped as some of the tension waned. Her heart skittered at the look in his eyes.
He seemed amused as he nestled her face in the palm of his hand and tilted her chin up. “Don’t worry, darling. Greer will marry you now. Propriety be damned.”
Before Molly could speak, Hardin brushed a kiss across her lips. Instinct spurred her to respond but clarity sunk in. She drew away. “That’s not why I—”
But he cut her protest short with another, deeper kiss that caused her toes to curl. When he finally pulled away, the expression on his face had changed. No longer was he the flinty, angry Hardin she knew. The ice in his eyes had melted. The tension in his jaw had softened. “I need to say something.”
She searched his eyes for a clue as to what he was about to reveal.
“I can’t do what I’m about to do without telling you this,” he confessed.
“Hardin, don’t,” she said, knowing he was on the verge of telling her everything about seeking revenge on the men who’d murdered Witt.
He blew out a warm sigh that fanned her cheeks. “I shouldn’t be telling you this but I need you to hear it.”
“Hard—”
He touched his finger to her lips. “I need you to know that I love you, Molly.”
Everything inside her stopped. Her heart. Her breath. She moved her lips to speak but no words would come. She’d waited a lifetime to hear these words but now that she had, she knew his declaration held a denial that would break her heart.
He continued. “It’s because I love you that I have to let you go. I’m no good for you, Molly. No matter what I do, I could never deserve you.”
Feeling as if an iron band gripped her heart, she shook her head.
“But Witt did. And Greer does,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper before he pressed a kiss to her forehead and left the room.
She stared after him, heedless of the tears coursing down her cheeks.

Tough…or tender? If she follows her heart, she won’t have to choose.

Molly has forever lusted for all three Barksdale brothers, but could never choose. Instead, scandal chose for her, and she married the youngest of the three. Then the brothers go to war, and Molly finds herself a grieving widow when her husband is murdered by a merciless band of Union soldiers.

Hardin Barksdale is hell-bent on avenging his brother. Greer Barksdale is honor-bound to protect his home. They both want Molly—and this time, they’re willing to share. The temptation is seductive, the passion sizzling. In harsh, post-war Tennessee, their nightly forbidden trysts wield the power to heal them all—if they can escape the twisted desires of a man bent on seeing all three of them dead.

The “too stupid to live” Romance Heroine

In romance writing, the acronym TSTL is bandied about, most often in considering the motivation for the heroine’s character. It’s the heroine who does things no sane human being would do. We’re all acquainted with such characters, namely from B horror flicks.

The heroine who goes unarmed into a room in a house roped off with police tape after hearing a suspicious noise (everybody knows criminals always return to the scene of the crime)
The character who walks outside to see why the dog has suddenly stopped barking (Uh… your pit bull has stopped barking. That’s not a good sign)
The complete and utter fool of a heroine who marries a man knowing he was convicted of rape and served twenty years without parole in the pen (does she really think he’s changed) ha!
The heroine who moves a much younger man into her home and offers to take care of him even though he is jobless and then agrees to take out a life insurance policy on herself in his name (is her ego so out of check that she doesn’t see herself as a wrinkled, leathernecked bat that is ripe for the picking – or poisoning?)

In romance, writing believable, solid heroines is hard, but it is all important so that the author can take the reader on a journey through insurmountable odds to find her happily ever after in the end. Savvy readers don’t fall for dumb characters who plunge headlong into even dumber situations. In literature as in life, TSTL characters don’t find happy endings.

Writing TSTL characters is lazy writing. It’s basing the heroine’s actions on coincidence to make the plot work rather than letting the character’s motivation drive the story. Romance readers want heroines that they’d like to be. They want them to make sense and to be smart. The aforementioned TSTL characters are more likely to end up on a gurney wearing a toe tag rather than in the arms of a real hero.

The Tragic Tale of Two Cousins That Inspired Scarlet Widow

It's the Yankees teachin' Dee Jobe who's boss.
... At the point of 15 guns.

The story of DeWitt Smith Jobe and his cousin who bore a similar name, DeWitt Smith, inspired the character brothers Witt and Hardin Barksdale in my historical romance, Scarlet Widow.

Jobe, a member of the Coleman Scouts, a band of Confederates who ran messages through enemy lines, was captured by 115th Ohio Calvary near Triune, Tennessee, August 29, 1864. Shortly before being apprehended, Jobe attempted to destroy the message he carried. In order to get him to reveal the information, the Union soldiers bound his hands and neck with a leather strap and choked him, gouged out his eyes and eventually, cut off his tongue. The stalwart Jobe suffered severe beatings and torture before the Federals dragged him behind a horse until he strangled to death. The Yankees left his body on the side of the road as a grisly example of the fate of captured spies. Dewitt Jobe’s mutilated body was discovered and buried in his family cemetery.

When his cousin, DeWitt Smith, heard of the atrocities Jobe suffered, he went on a killing spree, the details of which are steeped in legend and truth. Smith deserted John Bell Hood’s Army of Tennessee, vowing to kill every Yankee involved in his cousin’s death. Legend implicates Smith in the murder of as many as fifty Yankees, but factual accounts attribute him with far fewer.

In a story appearing in the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal, Tragic story of Jobe, Smith Seldom Told, by Dan Whittle Staff writer, a descendant of Jobe’s sister, John Moore, states - "Although not documented, because the Coleman Scouts left little if any paper trails, one report we've heard of the angry Dee Smith, lifelong friend and companion to Dewitt Smith Jobe dating back to when they fished in Overall Creek, is that he allegedly took a butcher knife and slit the throats of up to 14 Yankee soldiers sleeping in tents near Tullahoma. My Aunt Mary Floyd confirmed another story, that Dee (Smith) brought two Yankee prisoners to his home here near Smyrna. But his pistols were empty, with no bullets, which the Yankees didn't know. Dee (Smith) reportedly melted some lead and made new bullets. He then took the Yankees out to the road and shot them in the head. And then, he deposited the corpses in a sinkhole. My aunt said that as children, they often played and danced above that old sink hole, hollering down to the dead Yankees. She also confirmed Dee Smith some times left notes pinned to dead Yankee chests, telling why they were killed."

In Scarlet Widow, Hardin Barksdale seeks revenge on the soldiers who murdered his brother Witt.

Hardin flexed his fingers, examining the deep red imprint the wire had left on his palm. It occurred to him that his hand hurt. But that pain was the only thing reminding him that he was alive. Next time, he’d wear gloves. Not to avoid pain but rather to prevent the evidence the wire left behind. No. The pain, he welcomed.
He squatted and rolled the dead Union soldier over onto his back. The watery blue eyes stared, unseeing. Had those eyes gawked at Molly? Hardin looked away from the death stare.
He snorted, trying to dislodge the stench of the man mingled with piss and shit. The first time Hardin had seen a man die and shit himself, he’d been horrified. Had he grown so calloused that he looked upon another human being’s utter loss of life and dignity and feel nothing?
A deep indentation from the wire marred the man’s sunburned throat. His open mouth revealed a swollen, grayish tongue and a head full of rotted teeth. Hardin stared, expecting to feel something.
Remorse? Never.
Satisfaction? Not nearly enough.
When nothing more rose to the surface, Hardin rifled his pockets. Papers. A watch. Money.
This was the second man he’d killed in retaliation for what those bastards had done to Witt. Hardin had expected to feel excitement, at least some thrill of satisfaction at taking another one of them out but he didn’t. Witt was still gone.
And so many of the murdering sons of bitches were still out there. Still laughing about what they’d done. Still crowing about what they’d seen.
The story of Witt’s death had become the stuff of local legend. A spy caught and brutally tortured. He’d been hailed as a Confederate hero for not divulging information and saving his countrymen’s lives. He’d known he would die.
Hardin stood, trying to blot out the memory of finding Witt on the side of Nolensville Road, bloody and beaten beyond recognition—with his eyes gouged from their sockets and his tongue cut out.
Witt had known what would happen to him if he were caught. But Molly’s suffering was something altogether different—and equally painful. Word had gotten around that she’d kept silent no matter what the Yankees had done to her.
Hardin swallowed the bile in his throat. He should have known he couldn’t save Witt, that he should have stayed with Molly to protect her from the disgrace and prying hands meted out by Meshach January and his company of miscreants in blue who called themselves soldiers.
Witt would have wanted it that way. But in some ways, Hardin had known that Molly was far stronger than Witt.
That night, Hardin had made a promise to his dying brother. If it took him the rest of his life, he would see every last one of them dead.

Elena blinked. Her eyes focused on a tall, black-haired man. Her breath froze in her chest at the sight of him. Wavy locks protested against the pomade in his hair. His fashionably cut suit fit him to utter, mouth-watering perfection. Although he dressed the part, Elena knew this man was no gentleman. He leaned casually against the doorframe as if he belonged in this cabin—with her.

“Monsieur…I…you startled me. Apparently, you are in the wrong room.” But already, her mind wrapped around the question of why he had her key. Panic welled. Her pulse accelerated.

Not only were they true to their time but I felt the plot was well researched with convincing dialogue. The plot was thoroughly engrossing, and while secondary characters did have small parts to play, the story concentrated on James and Patience and how they were able to gain a better understanding of each other and allow their relationship to strengthen.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pace and how Ms. Glass slowly revealed Patience and James to us as two individuals who were well suited both sexually and emotionally, and the very naughty sexual games between them that lent credence to their tale. Patience and James were at times extremely passionate, thoroughly naughty, and indulged in varied sexual games to whet any readers’ appetite, especially when James showed his masterful side.

Tomas’ deliberations came to a halt as he and Crystal approached the television station. Goddamned press was stuck to the front of the building like slugs on wet rock. Shit. He revved the throttle to get their attention, making as much noise as possible. Tomas watched while the paparazzo turned toward the motorcycle. “Hang on, baby!” he shouted. Tomas aimed the Harley straight at the crowd.

At first the press corps showed interest in the bike heading straight for the front door of the building. Tomas watched as curiosity changed to consternation, then fear. A female reporter ran out of the way and a male jumped to the side. A dozen pairs of eyes went wide and people scattered as the Harley drew close enough to skin knees and elbows, blowing heat and fumes in its path.

“You crazy bastard!” A paparazzi screamed. Tomas only laughed in return, aiming the Harley directly at the front door. When they reached the glass entryway, he slid to a halt and Crystal hopped off the bike. She ran inside before anyone could get to her. Though most of the journalists had moved out of the way, one cameraman caught the entire event on film. A reporter spoke into her microphone.

Tomas turned the Harley around and headed for the parking lot. “Adios!” He waved a hand and disappeared around the side of the building.

Help Save the 20th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Flag!

Some of you know that one of my favorite heroes from my romance novel, Gatekeeper, Benton Smith, was based on the historical Brigadier General Thomas Benton Smith, CSA.

The flag his men carried is now up for restoration but funds are needed to complete the restoration so the flag can be displayed in the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville.

This 6 foot by 9 foot silk flag is stored in the basement of the Tennessee State Museum and is in serious need of conservation. Since the old banner is made from silk it is deteriorating quickly and we are desperately seeking donations to save it for future generations. We need to $48,000 to remove the invasive method of restoration that was done in the 1960s and to clean, chemically treat, seal, & frame the flag for posterity. The regiment’s name, battle honors, stars, and motto were painted on the flag which makes it even more fragile.

The 20th was organized in May of 1861 with men and boys who were mostly from Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, along with many from surrounding counties. The 20th fought in most battles of the Western theatre from Fishing Creek, KY, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, the battles for Atlanta, the bloody Tennessee Campaign in November of 1864, to the surrender in May 1865.

Dr. William McMurray wrote the definite history of the 20th infantry in 1908 and in it he wrote, “For 4 long years of crimson war the regiment was never routed, never lost their colors, nor refused to obey an order. They had on their rolls, first & last, thirteen hundred men and boys but when they laid down their arms at Greensboro, NC, there were only 34 for duty.”

There are several notable Tennesseans who served under this flag as well. Men like Captain Tod Carter from the Historic Carter house in Franklin and who was mortally wounded during the battle there. Col. William M. Shy, whose death at the battle of Nashville is marked with a hill named in his honor. Private Dewitt Smith Jobe who was tortured and killed by Union soldiers near Triune in 1863. Gen. Thomas Benton Smith who was severely injured at Nashville after he had surrendered. There are numerous other heroic men and stories connected to this flag that cant be included.

Twice the Novice is the story of an English woman who is contracted to marry a mysterious Bavarian count. After her sister scandalizes the family by running off with a rake, Anne has little other choice but to accept the count's offer.

Becoming a governess is impossible for her since she is dyslexic. And while she doesn't wish to be a burden on her family, she agrees to do whatever she must to secure the count's hand in marriage. She isn't prepared, however, for the attentions of the count's devastatingly handsome nephew, Axel von Sommerhalder.

In researching the book, I talked to several friends who suffer from dyslexia. One is a fellow Ellora's Cave author, Mari Freeman, who graciously consented to allow me to interview her so readers might know what it's like to be dyslexic.

When did you first discover you were dyslexic?

That's really two questions. The first is when did you notice you didn't quite get things like other people? It was probably by 6th grade that things really got hard. Teachers were more particular about spelling, sentence structure and basic grammar, all of which I could verbalize an understanding of, but often couldn't demonstrate on the written page.

Mind you, this was far before the days of MS Word and the red squiggly line. I fumbled through high school covering up and finding ways around my learning difference. I didn't realize I was creating my own system of reading and writing at the time.

I chose to participate in theater in school because it was an activity where I could excel. Verbalization was my strong suit. I didn’t need to spell or get the comma in the right spot to recite lines of a play. High school theater is where I fell in love with the story. I could master the beauty of language as long as I could do it out loud.

The second question was when exactly did someone tell me exactly what was different about me? I was TESTED and given the diagnosis of moderate dyslexia around the age of 27, after I'd returned to college for a second attempt at a degree. On the first go ‘round, the lack of ability to spell had been too large an obstacle to deal with for me at 18 years old.

In Twice the Novice, Anne is ashamed of the fact she cannot read. Since my story takes place in the 1700s, nothing was known of dyslexia. Anne goes to great lengths to hide her dyslexia. Have you ever tried to hide your dyslexia or were you ever ashamed because reading didn't come as easily to you as it did to non-dyslexics?

I am fortunate that my dyslexia is not so bad as to prevent me from reading at all. I love to read now. I may see the text in an incoherent jumble on the page, but my coping mechanisms have enabled me to anticipate danger spots and correct what I see. I get close enough. Writing or typing is not so easy. My brain can’t simply fill in the blanks and correct the spatial issues as I go, as it can when reading.

I must type and then re-type. But I am still, even today, after several published books and a successful corporate career, making efforts to hide my difference in public situations.

I have almost all public posts proofread by someone. All my ms submissions, pitches, basically anything public facing, are proofread. I pay for some of those services. Twitter and Facebook, I have to let go if I want participate.

Like your character, I'm very often ashamed, even though I know I shouldn't be. I fear those who read my transposed twitters or mangled Facebook messages will think I have no business writing books because I can't spell or keep a comma out of a period's place. Why wouldn’t they?

The late Stephen J Cannell, who was dyslexic, said something like, "I didn't need to spell to tell a good story. I just had to prove it to someone."

I have to remind myself of that all the time or I would quit. I can tell a good story. I just can’t spell a good story. I'm lucky my editors work with me pretty well. It takes more effort and patience, but I hope I make it worth it. My readers seem to think so.

In Twice the Novice, the hero patiently works with the heroine to look at the whole word rather than at the individual letters. How did you overcome dyslexia in order to be a multi-published writer? And how does it affect your writing?

I think this is exactly how I work. I’m a very big picture thinker. In one of my past incarnations I was a project manager. I used intricate software to help me manage details, but the big picture of a large software development project was easy for me to juggle.

It’s the same for my writing. I type every sentence I write about four times to get it as close as I can to correct for grammar and spelling. My EC book, Birthright, has 21 characters and two subplots. It’s a big, long book. That added up to about 400,000 words typed (and deleted and typed again) to get that first draft finished. Buddy, were my fingers tired. Don’t worry. It’s nowhere near that long finished.

Characters, the story, those process seems to be similar to most non-dyslexic authors. Getting all of it down on paper is the Hell of it all. You don’t have to go back to the regency period to find people who suffered terribly over their learning difference. I feel for people even in recent history.

What great storytellers did we miss out on because there was no real understanding, no assistance? I was stubborn. My parents believed I could do anything I wanted, even if it was hard. I was expected to succeed in everything. I believed I could succeed because they did. My mom helped me master reading and struggled through a ton of math with me.

Later in life, when I decided I was going to write ‘with the intent to earn a living,” I believed that was possible too. I have help now as I did then. (Although my Mom does not read my erotic books. Lol) I have proofreaders, an editor who also believes in me, and a fabulous critique partner.

You will never see five books a year from me. I can't. It just takes me longer. I've tried methods like voice to text, but the tedious business of getting the words on the page correctly is part of the creative process for me. It is what it is.

If you have dyslexia or another learning difference, do not sell yourself short. Use your full vocabulary. No matter what your occupation happens to be, use the rich language that is in your head. Don’t choose simpler words because you can get them on the page easier. You can fix your spelling in the second draft, with help if needed.

My short story, Extra Sensual Perception, is included in the Flavors of Ecstasy I anthology. Set in Nashville, the hero lives on Benton Smith Road, a street named after the real Thomas Benton Smith. The road encircles Shy's Hill where Smith was captured during the Battle of Nashville.

Nashville traffic on a Friday afternoon was a bitch and when Iris finally turned onto Harding Place, she was thwarted by a long line of slow-moving drivers. Even switching on her hazard lights and honking her horn didn’t yield results.

When she ultimately arrived at Benton Smith Road, she turned and raced around the circle until she found the address. The driveway wound downward and when Iris saw a silver BMW in the garage, her heart sank.

The house looked sickeningly familiar. She’d seen it before—in her vision of his death.

Benton Smith also makes a cameo appearance in Rebel Rose, a historical set in my home town of Florence, Alabama.

In October 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood moved his twenty thousand strong Army of Tennessee through Florence Alabama on his way north to fight the battles of Franklin and Nashville.

Benton Smith's brigade was among them ~

Panic unfurled through her limbs and Rose tried to sit up but Dr. Roberts urged her back down on the pillows. “You’re not ready to get up just yet, Mrs. O’Kelley. Be still.”

Another Confederate appeared in the doorway. He looked to be about the same age as the young doctor and also surprised to see her awake. “How’s your patient?”

“She’s giving me more trouble than one of the boys, General Smith.”

The boy general’s dimples deepened with his handsome smile. “Mind the doctor, missy. He’s a good doctor. My only complaint is that he’s a little too fond of being at front for my taste.”

Hello and thanks for stopping by! It’s day 4 of my world tour promoting my newest release, Saving Lady Ilsa and I’m happy to be with fellow Ellora’s Cave historical author Debra Glass.

Today I’m going to talk about covers. I’ve been very lucky with all of my publishers because they’ve all depicted my books so accurately. This is especially true of my cover for Saving Lady Ilsa. The models portrayed on the cover actually look like the characters as well.

Though I must admit, I was torn when I saw the nakedness of the female model. Today, I thought I would ask you, the readers of erotic romance, what you think of such risqué covers? Is this too much skin, or does it promise you’ll find the heat level inside you’re hoping for? Does it matter either way when buying an ebook that you’re going to read on the privacy of your own computer or device? Or given the privacy of ebooks, do you enjoy indulging in a little extra risqué with your cover images? Inquiring authors want to know.

Here’s chapter four of Secret Seduction, a free short story which takes place parallel to Bradford and Ilsa's story in the servants' quarters

Chapter Four: Secret Seduction

      Angelina shifted from one foot to the other, on the verge of darting back inside. She’d agreed to meet Todd for a picnic on her one day off, but what had at the time sounded like a romantic outing now seemed like a terrible mistake. She’d love another of his delicious kisses, but to tempt him with forbidden treats was a dangerous game. Boys who received kisses next expected more than a kiss, and it was the more that frightened her.
      She whirled around and started back toward the manor, only to find him sauntering toward her with a basket in his arm covered by a red cloth.
      “Er, Mr. Jones, I’ve been thinking...”
      “Come, let us talk about it on the way, shall we?” He looped his arm in hers and urged her along.
      “About the kiss we shared-” Wonderful scents rose from the basket. “Where did you get that?” Heavens, if he’d stolen it!
      “From my mother. She’s cook at Mayfair.”
      “Your mother?”
      “Well, more a mother to me than my own. You were saying about the kiss?”
      She straightened her shoulders and pulled her arm free of his. “It occurred to me that kissing you was a mistake.”
      “A mistake? Did you find it repulsive?” He led her off the path through a narrow cut in the bramble.
      “No of course not-”
      “Did I have halitosis?”
     She sighed, fighting a smile. “No, Mr. Jones, you did not have halitosis.”
      They emerged in a secluded meadow she’d never noticed before, not visible to the path or the nearby road. He set the basket down under a fluttering Maple tree and spread out the blanket. “What was wrong with it, then?”
      “There was nothing wrong with the kiss,” she insisted. “But I fear it gave you the wrong idea about me.”
      He sat on the blanket and began removing items from the basket. Among baked goods, bread and cheese was a long stalk of green grapes from Mayfair’s vineyard. Her favorite kind, and a rare treat indeed.
      “I think you are lovely, kind and beautiful. Am I mistaken?”
      Exasperated, she put her hands on her hips. “What I mean to say is that boys who receive kisses soon expect more than kisses. I wish it to be understood, there shall be no more than kisses occurring between us.”
      “Do you mean you intend to kiss me again?” He grinned rakishly.
      “Mr. Jones!”
      He chuckled. “I’m teasing you, Angel. Please, sit. I invited you today for nothing more than a nice picnic, I promise.”
      She sat on the blanket, careful to keep the basket between them. “Are you certain you’re allowed to have this?”
      He placed a hand to his heart. “I swear the constable is not out hunting me.”
      Angelina accepted a golden brown meat pie. Her mouth melted on the first bite. If only she could cook this well, she’d be promoted to the kitchens for sure.
      “Though there is a condition.” A spark of mischief glinted in his eyes. “From this moment on, you must cease addressing me as Mr. Jones.”
      She set down the pie and wiped her fingers on a linen napkin bearing a monogrammed “T”. “We are friends now, Todd.” She offered her hand and he squeezed her fingers. “And you may call me Angel, if it pleases you.”
      His warm smile told her it did. A warm rush of delight swirled inside her. It pleased her, too.
      They ate all the food and then lay on their backs watching fluffy clouds pass by, calling out what each cloud reminded them of until the setting sun tinged them in pink.
      “I should return. Mary was expecting me to sew with her this afternoon.” She kept to herself that on the afternoons of their one day off a week, they hid themselves away and worked on the pretty nightshifts they planned to wear for their husbands on their wedding nights.
      Angelina suppressed a twinge of regret. Mary already knew who she planned to marry. She and Lucas were so sweet on each other some days Angelina wanted to cry for them, other days she wanted to shout at them.
      She looked over at Todd. He rolled onto his side and propped his head on his hand. If she were to marry a servant, he would be the one. She could stare into his green eyes forever.
      “You haven’t asked me for the kiss I promised you,” she whispered.
      She leaned forward and placed her lips against his. This time he was gentle and restrained, letting her choose when to be bold. She tipped her head and parted her lips, urging him with a touch of her tongue. He inched closer on the blanket and cupped her cheek. There ceased to be anyone else, anything else in the world but the two of them and their wonderful kiss.
      The rumble of a carriage passing on the road dragged her out of her dream. They rose silently and packed up their basket. He walked her back to the servants’ entrance to the kitchen.
      Todd removed his hat and bowed. “My lady, thank you for a lovely afternoon.”
      Tears pricked her eyes as she watched him go. How very easy it would be to fall in love with Mr. Todd Jones. She could not lie to herself. She already was half in love with him.
      But marrying a servant was not part of her grand dream, she reminded herself, whether she loved him or not.

Historical Hero - Stede Bonnet

Several years ago, I traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, and stayed in the beautiful Battery Carriage House Inn facing the historic White Point Gardens.

Just prior to my visit, however, I watched an episode of Haunted History that featured events witnessed by patrons of the inn.

Visitors had seen the headless torso of a Civil War ghost while another spirit, dubbed the “gentleman ghost”, had frightened several females by joining them on their beds. Needless to say, I was nervous when I crawled into the antique four-poster my first night there, which, incidentally, was a Friday the thirteenth.

Whether it was just my imagination or really the famed gentleman ghost, I did feel a presence sit on the bed with me that night and the night thereafter.

While on one of the Charleston ghost walk tours, our guide asked if anyone was staying at the inn. Sheepishly I raised my hand, and she inquired if the ghost had sat on the bed with me. I recounted my experience.

With a wave of her hand, she dismissed the History Channel’s version, which portended the gentleman ghost was a man who had committed suicide in the house. The guide claimed she knew the identity of the real gentleman ghost. “Why, it’s Stede Bonnet,” she said in her lovely Low Country drawl. “He was incredibly handsome and was known as the ‘gentleman pirate’.

He was hanged on the site where the house stands now.”

The romantic story of Stede Bonnet has fascinated me ever since.

Stede Bonnet was christened July 29, 1687. He was born into a wealthy family from Barbados. He married Mary Allamby in 1709, and the couple had four children. Shortly after the birth and subsequent death of his daughter in 1716, he purchased a ship—which he named Revenge—hired a crew and sailed off to become a pirate.

Shortly thereafter, he encountered Blackbeard. The two formed an uneasy alliance but after a falling out, Bonnet petitioned the governor of North Carolina for a pardon and a Lettre of Marque, which would classify him as a privateer instead of a pirate.

When a hurricane prevented him from obtaining his Lettre of Marque, he returned to a life of piracy.

In the late summer of 1718, Colonel William Rhett led an expedition against pirates along the Carolina coast and captured Stede Bonnet at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Bonnet was held in Charleston but managed to escape disguised in a woman’s dress.

He was recaptured and, despite impassioned entreaties for his life by the ladies of Charleston, he was hanged for piracy on December 10, 1718, at White Point Gardens.

While the characters of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard are based on real people, Watchkeeper is a work of fiction.

An Excerpt From: WATCHKEEPER

“Bloody damn hell!” A ragged groan tore from his throat as he collapsed and covered her.

Gwen lay on top of the scattered divorce papers underneath the man who’d confronted her with them. She was trembling and sated and flooded with renewed love for him.

She ran her hands over his back, which was misted with perspiration. His hot breath fanned her ear and she turned her head more fully toward him as he brushed his mouth against the sensitive shell. He pressed a kiss there and then propped on one elbow to gaze into her eyes.

Gwen’s stomach tightened at the combination of love and lust in his expression. She cleared her throat. “I don’t suppose you plan to divorce me after this.”

His forehead furrowed. “Divorce?”

Gwen swallowed. “I can change if you can. I want this to work.”

“What to work, luv?”

“Our marriage.”

He burst into laughter. “Marriage?”

Gwen was stunned—and bruised. Her hand slid from his shoulder and she swiped at a lock of sweat-dampened hair that had stolen across her face. “Yes, our marriage.”

“Marriage?” he repeated incredulously.

Gwen’s eyes narrowed. “If you still want a divorce after this, then by all means, you fucking bastard, give me a pen and I’ll sign the papers.”

He cleared his throat. “Luv, how can we possibly divorce when we are not married?”

Anger flared. She slapped at his shoulders. “Get off me and stop with that fake accent.”

He made no move to get off her. Instead, he endured her feeble pushing and slapping until she grew weary and stopped. When she was finally breathless, he said, “Exactly who, my lovely lady witch, do you think I am?”

Panic surged.

Gwen stared.

He was still semi-erect inside her.

But who was he?

Suddenly, a blast of wind rushed through the room, rattling the windows and door violently. Roger’s divorce papers swirled around her while the plantation blinds rattled. The temperature in the room felt as if it had abruptly dropped twenty degrees.

“Major Stede Bonnet!” a voice reverberated in the tiny room. The sound of it had an unearthly, metallic rasp to it.

Gwen gasped. Her gaze riveted to the pale apparition of a pirate. He stood inches from the bed with his legs braced wide and his hands on his hips. She froze.

Wearing a cutlass belted to his hip and twin flintlock pistols jammed into the waistband of his breeches, he was dressed from head to toe in the eighteenth-century garb of a pirate. A greasy black, braided beard jutted from his chin, hanging halfway down his chest. His bottle green coat was so long it nearly concealed his trousers. The coat’s impossibly wide cuffs were turned up and held in place with big brass buttons. Thigh-high black leather boots and a ragged, feathered tricorn hat completed his pirate ensemble.

“Edward Teach,” seethed the man who was still embedded inside her.

Gwen’s gaze flicked back and forth between them. Her heart beat rapidly. Well…she had wanted to meet a ghost. But this one looked downright mean.

The sulfurous odor of brimstone permeated the air.

Chills swept her arms and legs despite the carnal heat of the man on top of her. The voice in her head told her there was no possibility of life ever going to back to normal. Not after this.

Rebel Rose by Debra Glass - The Rest of the Story

Before the Civil War, a woman's job was to cook, clean, sew, wash, and care for children. In fact, there were many things a woman was not permitted to do. They could not vote, own property, serve on a jury, or be elected to political office.

After the outbreak of the Civil War, with the men away fighting, a woman's role changed. Some women took positions in factories and many others became nurses.

Others became spies and even blockade runners.

It was these unique women who inspired the heroine in my historical romance, Rebel Rose.

Belle Boyd of West Virginia passed along information about Union battle plans to Confederate Generals. Rose O'Neal Greenhow (the real Rebel Rose) was a Washington socialite who passed on coded information to the Confederates. Many believe she is responsible for the Confederate victory at the first Battle of Bull Run.

Medicines, food, and clothing, and most other things were contraband during the war. It was necessary to obtain permits from the provost-general in command before the supplies could be obtained. Many a pretty belle was enlisted to acquire goods from the Union officers.

In my own hometown of Florence (and the setting for Rebel Rose), Mary Nail Blair was known as a beautiful black haired widow and she was the most daring blockade runner in North Alabama.

Following the surrender of Forts Donelson and Henry in 1862, traffic on the Tennessee River was controlled by the Union Navy. Florence was cut off from receiving any supplies from the outside. Locals began to depend on blockade runners who were brave enough to go behind enemy lines from Florence to Nashville.

Mary Nail Blair was said to have been the most successful of these. Her wagon train was driven by her three slaves and she rode ahead in her own buggy. Her granddaughter claimed she was as good as a general and could outmaneuver any of the Yankee forces.

At the battle of Franklin, her caravan was captured by the Union army and she barely escaped back to Florence. She died soon after the war but her bravery was heralded for years afterward.

I combined elements from many of these historical accounts to create the fictional characters in Rebel Rose. To borrow from Paul Harvey - And now you know the rest of the story!

When people find out I write romance, the first question I'm asked is, "Where do you come up with your ideas?"

My reply. "Everything and everyone inspires me." From songs, to movies, to books, to stories in the news, I find inspiration for plots and characters.

Growing up in the 80's, I adored MTV and New Wave music. Adam Ant's zany tunes and videos spoke to my love of pirates and brigands of yore. Remember Jolly Roger and Prince Charming? :::Sigh:::

Okay, so my kids think I'm nuts for ever liking a guy who wore tight leather pants and makeup but his song, Stand and Deliver, instilled a romantic interest in the stories of English highwaymen.

My muse - one of two smart aleck ghosts who hangs out at my house - usually pesters me around 3 a.m. with ideas for stories and characters. He said, "Well, you've always wanted to write a highwayman story..."

My dilemma was making the highwayman an English lord instead of a thief and yet incorporating the highway robber mystique. Hey, what heroine wouldn't rather have the manor house than a hovel in the end?

I concocted a series of mistaken identities and created two deliciously wicked villains to thwart my characters' happily ever after and thus, my hero, John Badcock, was born.

For John Badcock's devilish good looks, I sought inspiration from The Vampire Diaries hottie, Ian Sommerhalder. That dark hair and those icy blue eyes were just perfect for John Badcock.

Excerpt:

He closed what little distance was left between them, removed his mask and before she could get a good look at him, he covered her mouth again. Sophia’s eyes fluttered shut as she surrendered to his expert lips and tantalizing tongue. Curiosity mounted when his fingers glided down her arms until he held both her hands behind her back. But sheer panic surged when he dragged his mouth from hers and began binding her wrists with his satin mask.
“What are you doing?” she demanded.
“Divesting you of your control as surely as I’ve just divested you of your clothes,” he said flippantly.
“Untie me this instant, you miserable wretch!” Her command fell on deaf ears.
“Ah, spirited,” he said and whirled her around so that her back was to him. A smart slap to her backside caused her to yelp. The sting transformed into a warm throb, sending wild impulses through her body that were in direction opposition to the protests from her brain.
She gulped as his warm hands moved around her waist, as his lips nibbled the nape of her neck.
“Sir, I beg you—”
He chuckled low. “See there. I told you that you’d be begging me.”

You’ve all heard the old advice, write what you know.

When I first started seriously writing romance, I rarely read the type romances I wrote. This was a mistake. How could I target a publisher if I didn’t know what they wanted?

Find out which companies publish the type books you write. Read, read, read the type books you write. But read with a critical eye. Pay attention to how the author sets up the story, the style, the language, the author’s voice, the pacing, the level of plot intensity. Those are the same things editors will be looking for from you as a prospective writer for them. Make time to read books like the ones you write.

DEBRA GLASS is the author of over fifteen books of historical and paranormal romance, non-fiction, and folklore. The recipient of the National Society of Arts and Letters Alabama Screenwriter Award, she went on to win the NSAL Empire State Award for excellence in screenwriting. Debra Glass with 'name in a book' winner, Tewanda Hardy

at the Heart of Dixie Reader's Luncheon

Tewanda Hardy has luck on her side. I've never been to a reader's luncheon where Tewanda didn't go home with door prizes, author baskets, and several 'name in a book' wins. I believe Having Patience is the 13th or 14th book in which Tewanda's name appears.

When I drew Tewanda's name in 2009, I was working on a 4th installment of the Phantom Lovers series and planned to give her the character of a voodoo priestess. (I might yet!) But I shifted focus to my first love - historical romance. Because I write historicals, I changed Tewanda to Wanda and gave her a role as the heroine's servant, who has a well-deserved reputation for reading risque romance novels.

Here's an excerpt from Having Patience:

“What’s this?” Patience asked. She couldn’t imagine.
James lifted the lid off one of the boxes before withdrawing a book.
“What on earth?” she began but James thrust the book into her hand.
Her gaze dropped to the title. The Rose and the Rapier. “What is this?” she demanded.
“A romantic novel.”
“A what?” she inquired but she knew very well what it was. Her handmaiden, Wanda, read novels such as these all the time. Patience did not see the benefit of reading such trite writing. Why had James brought her these? Surely he knew she preferred the philosophical musings of the ancients to this drivel.
“My lord, you insult me,” she said, wagging the book at him in an effort to get him to take it back.
He cocked an eyebrow and for a split second, Patience forgot about the book. She had agreed to call him by his given name. “James,” she said softly. Something warm and liquid swirled within her at the intimate utterance of his name. The fact that he’d practically commanded her to use his name instead of some other formal address only added to the mysterious feelings churning inside her.
“My gift is not intended as an insult,” he told her.
“We have…known each other for nearly a year now. Have I ever given you the notion that I would read…this? For heaven’s sake, James, The Rose and the Rapier?”
One corner of his mouth pulled into a partial smile.
“What then?” Patience was confused. “Are these for Wanda?”
“Of course they’re not for Wanda. They’re for you.”
“I don’t understand.”
James folded his arms over his chest. “I think perhaps that you did not get a good education from your governess.”
Patience suddenly comprehended the meaning of the books. A torrid blush infused her cheeks. Anger knotted her stomach. “Are you insinuating that I might learn how to…how to submit to you by reading this…this twaddle?”
His shoulders rose and dropped with a sharp breath. “Not in the least. I’m not insinuating anything. I only hope to learn what pleases you.”

His dark eyes narrowed into vicious slits. He gestured to the book. “Well I suggest you find something in there that does.”
She realized she was shaking. And yet, this was the very opportunity for which she had yearned. Here and now, she could make him angry enough to take her, to claim her.
Something clenched inside her—something between her thighs. She summoned courage. “No. I’ll not do it.”
Two steps closed the distance between them. She gasped as James hauled her against him. All at once she was aware of the heat of his body, the sinister gleam in his eyes, the cruel twist of his lips, the hard feel of every unyielding inch of his chest, his thick, powerful thighs, the spicy, male scent of him and the warmth of his breath fanning her face.
Oh do it now! Make me. Please, make me.
But instead, he glared. “You will read each and every one of these books and you will take a pen and underline what piques your interest.”
He snatched the book from her hand and opened it at random. “Here,” he said and began to read. “Rose yielded as Sir John pressed a kiss to her breast—”
“Stop!” Patience wailed. What was she saying? She really wanted to beg him to do just that right now. Where was her pen and ink?

Research Your Market

Once you’ve defined what you write, you will have to research the publishers you wish to target to find their submission guidelines. It is extremely important to submit your manuscript exactly according to the publisher’s submission guidelines. Anything that is out of the ordinary is likely to annoy an editor and you’ll receive a rejection without them ever having read your work. It doesn’t matter if you’ve written the next Pulitzer Prize winning novel.

Some publishers require 1 inch margins. Others want 1 ½ inches. Some want double spacing and Times New Roman font. Others want Courier New 12 point font only. Writing for the word count is also important. If your story is only 90 thousand words and the company publishes 120 thousand word novels, your story will be rejected on the basis of insufficient word count alone.

Know the line in which your book will fit. Many houses have different lines that have subtle or not so subtle differences. If you target a particular line and send in a manuscript tailored to that line, an editor is going to see that you have done your research and you will make a more favorable impression.

Find out if the house you are targeting accepts agented or unagented manuscripts. Do they want emailed submissions or snail mailed submissions?

If you research your market beforehand, you will save yourself time and money in the long run and if you’ve written a well-crafted story tailored specifically for the publishing house for which you want to write, you’ll make a winning impression on an editor.

Be Computer Savvy

In order to be a writer in twenty-first century, you must be computer savvy. The publishing industry is undergoing vast changes from the old hardback print book to the digital edition. Nearly all books published now are published digitally and I daresay there will come a time when a book in print is difficult to come by.

Before you turn up your nose at digital books, allow me to introduce you to the royalty check. Digital royalties typically run 3.75 % of the cover price whereas print royalties are .25 %. Ouch. For a digital book with a 5$ cover, I’ll get roughly 3 bucks of that with the rest going to the publisher. For a print book, one thin dime.

E readers are everywhere. Amazon’s Kindle is advertised daily. Books can be downloaded instantly and your entire library can fit on one jump drive.

Nearly all publishers now require electronic submissions which require the writer to know how to format a document in Word, how to attach that file to an email and then how to communicate with the editors, publishing house, editing process, all via the computer and the Internet.

Some of my books have never had a word printed on a piece of paper. Everything from conception to submission to editing to sales was handled on the computer. The only piece of paper I ever see regarding that book might be my royalty check.

If the computer is still a scary unknown to you, check with your local library. Many offer free classes on computer literacy.

Maintain a professional email account. Even if you use yahoo for your personal emails, choose a different email provider for contact with an editor. You don’t want the word Yahoo after your name. It’s also a good idea to use your name as your professional email rather than TigerFanGirl or TammiLovesPooh. Nowadays, an email letter will be your first contact with your prospective publisher. Make a good and professional impression.

Making friends with the computer is a must if you wish to break into today’s publishing market.

Be Able to Classify Your Book

Before I ever got serious about getting published, I attended a class with Michael Garret who is an editor and writer. I had 400 typed pages of my baby with me. It was a vampire story which I wrote from my dissatisfaction with all the other vampire stories I’d read or seen at the movies. Mr. Garret asked me, “If the book were to be published, in which section would it be found at your local bookstore?”

Well, that stumped me. I didn’t know. He told me, “If you don’t know, the publisher doesn’t know and they won’t buy your book.”

I can still quote the rejection letter I received after one long year of waiting for three chapters and a synopsis of this book to be read. “Dear Debra, your writing is, at times evocative, however we must pass on publishing this book because there are elements of both romance and horror and the editors don’t feel they can determine a genre for this work.”

Funny how those rejections stick with you but I can’t recall the exact wording of my first acceptance letter.

Michael Garret was right. I’ve heard many unpublished writers say they’re writing the next great American novel which is based on their own experiences. In the sage words of Spongebob Squarepants, “Well, good luck with that!”

Writers must know in which genre are writing. They need to know exactly where their book would be found on a bookstore shelf, be it romance, teen fiction, horror, inspirational, biographical, etc.

Editors do not want anything different – especially from an unknown. They want tried and true plots but with a fresh spin. They want to know exactly how to classify your book. Don’t hope to surprise an editor by crossing two genres. That’s the fastest track to rejection.

Study your "writing voice." Get input from friends and critique partners. Is your writing funny, serious, dramatic, melodramatic? Do you have a light voice which is perfect for contemporaries or a dark voice that lends itself well to suspense, horror or paranormal? Or perhaps, your writing is filled with prose and antiquated words perfect for penning a historical romance or historical fiction.

Know what it is that you write and write to your strength.

Write in Layers

How do you write? In other words, what is your writing style?

To write consistently, an author needs to understand how they go about the process of writing a story.

I’m what’s known as a pantser. That means I write by the seat of my pants. My story ideas start out with a beginning and an end. What happens in the middle is totally up to my characters and sometimes, they surprise me!

The other style of writer is the plotter. A plotter is someone who knows every detail, every twist and turn and every red herring before they put the first word on a page.

The end result is the same. Both pantsers and plotters are capable of writing intricate stories with well developed characters and intriguing plots that don’t have the dreaded sagging middle.

But whether you’re a pantser or a plotter, the goal is to get the story on the page. I know many talented writers who have wonderful ideas but who cannot get them on a page because they fixate on perfection.

Instead of expecting a perfect first draft, I write in layers. I write the first chapter which will include the setup and the introduction of the main characters and the initial conflict. In addition, I include the dialogue and minor description. In essence, I get the story on the page. Then I go back and describe and add more detail. After writing 2500 words or so, I will then revise, layering in more description and tweaking the dialogue. I might have thought of something that will add a little twist the plot so I add this.

At the end of my book, I put it aside for several days and then revise with fresh eyes.

After that, I enlist the help of a critique partner who helps polish my manuscript. Critique partners are also great sounding boards when working out plot points or when your characters run away with your story.

Editors are busy people who don’t have time for a manuscript filled with grammatical errors and typos. With the sheer volume of books being published right now, authors must, must, must perfect manuscripts. Writing in layers will help you submit a clean, impressive submission.

Have Love Affair With Verbs

After I sold my first romance to Ellora’s Cave, I knew if I wanted to sell a second book, I needed to continue to hone my craft. The mere act of loving writing was not going to keep me in publishing contracts. I read how-to books, surfed the web reading craft articles by other authors, and attended workshops on a variety of writing related techniques from goal, motivation and conflict to creating three dimensional characters who leap off the page.

But one piece of advice stuck with me and served to enhance my writing in a way nothing else had.

I’d once heard an English professor at my alma mater, the University of North Alabama, say, “A love of verbs is the one thing all good writers have in common.”

Of all the craft and how-to workshops I’ve attended on writing, that one statement is what I keep in mind when I’m writing.

Vibrant verbs will breathe life into your story.

It’s such an easy concept and one that is often overlooked by aspiring authors. Here is how I taught it to my 10 year old:

Look at the following sentence - Billy was running across the field.

What if you tried replacing ‘ran’ with something else? Billy charged across the field. Billy fled across the field. Billy bounded. Billy dashed. Billy tore. Billy scampered. Each one of those verbs has meaning the reader can visualize.

During your rewrites, find all the times you used “was” and other “be” verbs and replace them with verbs that will not only make your writing lively and energetic but will draw your reader into your story. Overusing the verb “to be” (is, am, are, was, were, been, being) will drain your story of life and bore your reader to boot.

Strong verbs strengthen your writing. Strong verbs pull your reader in and allow them to feel the emotions you as the writer are trying to convey with words.

Strong verbs will make the difference between your first sale and the big stack of rejected books gathering dust in a drawer.

Treat Writing Like a Job

The best advice I ever received as a writer came from my husband – who, incidentally, does not even read books! I had been lamenting the sour economy. Two weeks before 9/11, I’d bought Ryan Piano Company, building, business, inventory and all. Making a piano business work for someone with no experience in running a business was not an easy feat. I had single-handedly funded the store with my side business of giving my ghost walk tours and selling copies of my regional ghost story collections which I had self-published.

Piano sales fell somewhere between slim and none.

My husband, who is a businessman, asked me, “If you could do anything for a living, what would you choose to do?” I didn’t even have to think about it. I told him, “I’d be a writer.”

I waited for the response I’d gotten from husband one and husband two which was this: “Who’d want to read anything you would write?”

Instead, my husband said, “All right. If you want to be a writer, then treat writing like a job.”

(Cue light bulb illumination) I’d never thought of treating something that I enjoyed doing like a job and from that moment on, I began thinking in terms of working as a writer.

Writing means more than spending inordinate amounts of time in front of a computer or with a pen and paper in hand. As a serious writer, I realized I had to learn the market. I needed to know what was selling, to whom it was selling, how much it was selling, which publishing houses were buying and which were not. I researched agents and editors just as I would have if I’d been looking for a job as a potential employee.

I joined a professional writer’s organization. Since I wanted to publish in the romance genre, I joined the national organization, Romance Writer’s America, and then the local Heart of Dixie chapter.

I had joined RWA ten years prior and was more in awe of the other published authors than learning how to hone the craft for myself. But when I got down to the business of becoming a writer, I recalled watching, then unpublished authors, Rhonda Nelson and Debra Webb network and learn the ropes while developing their writing skills. Both are amazing writers who can weave unforgettable stories but they knew that in this business where only 1% of submissions make it to publication, if they hadn’t researched their market, then those fabulous manuscripts might be sitting in a drawer somewhere instead of attracting readers on the book store shelves. Because of their dedication to networking, skill-building, and their overall professionalism, both Debra and Rhonda are now multi-published authors.

I learned a lot from watching their careers unfold.

Watching other writers taught me the difference between being a writer and being an author. An author is someone who writes when the muse strikes and who probably drinks bourbon before noon. (But hey, bourbon is also a job requirement for a southern belle as well – so that one didn’t count.) Kidding aside, a writer is someone who writes daily, who studies the publishing market, sets goals and works to achieve them.

Only after I worked at all these things (minus the bourbon) and began treating my writing like a job, I got what’s known in the publishing world as “the call” – or my first acceptance.
