Inspiration by Debra Glass

As a published romance author, I am most often asked where I get the inspiration for my sexy heroes and imaginative plots.

Inspiration can come from just about anywhere. Television, movies, a passing phrase, a picture, a historical figure. But most often, my inspiration comes from events in my own life.

Benton Smith, the hero in Gatekeeper (April, 2008) was based on the historical Thomas Benton Smith who fought with the 20th Tennessee Infantry Regiment during the Civil War but, of course, there were certain elements about Benton I had to create to turn him in to a romance novel hero.

In Shadowkeeper, (August, 2008) I very loosely based my hero William Red Feather on William "Red Eagle" Weatherford, a distant relative of mine. I also used a local historic site as inspiration for the haunted house in my story.

One of my favorite stories is Watchkeeper (due to be released Fall, 2008) which is based on real-life pirate, Stede Bonnet.

It's easy to base a character on someone who existed but very difficult to bring them to life without delving into their emotional motivation. And in order for me, as a writer to find the emotion and attraction in my characters, I had to experience this firsthand in my life.

I recently celebrated my second anniversary to the most wonderful man in the world. My husband has inspired me spiritually, emotionally, and physically to write deep, driven characters.

It's no coincidence that the first time I have ever known true love in my life, I found my voice in my writing!

The photo is of my handsome hubby. You can see why I couldn't be happier and couldn't be more inspired.
